How Does This Site Work?

This site exists with a simple purpose: to allow users to search and access HIV Testing, Treatment and Counselling sites in South Africa

The means to do so is a simple online mapping system, where you specify the type of service you are after and where you would like to receive the service, and have available results displayed in a relevant map view.

Using the system is simple and shouldn't take very long to master. The page is laid out into three main areas:

  • The left hand bar is used for stating your requirements - i.e. the services you require, and your preferred geographical area
  • The main center part is used to display the results in the map view
  • The right hand bar is used to list any results displayed in the main center part, as well as to present organisation details when relevant

The place to start is the left hand side bar:

Firstly, choose the service type you are interested in, using the "Select Service" drop down list box. The services available are the following:

  • Testing
  • Treatment
  • Mother To Child Prevention
  • Emergency & Trauma Treatment
  • Education
  • Nutrition
You can only choose one service at a time, if you would like to know about Testing and Education, you will have to do two separate searches.

Secondly, set your geographical region using the "Select Province" drop down list box, and the sub-regional drop down lists that load in the "Town or Place" and "Select Suburb" boxes (these are dependent on your selections in the parent list boxes).

A hierarchical structure exists between the geographical region drop down list boxes, which means that each list box in turn loads the relevant options in the next list box:

  • Province
  • Town or Place
  • Select Suburb

So, if you choose Gauteng province, the relevant options will load in the "Town or Place" drop down list as follows - Akasia, Alberton, Alexandra, etc.

The third input box is separate to the above boxes, and functions independently of them. If you know the name of an organisation (or other detail - street, etc), an alternative way to locate the organisation exists - the "Find by name" box.

Simply type in the name of the organisation and hit the search button to have relevant organisations displayed in the map view.

Be aware that this search means does not only search the organisation name field, it will return matches from other fields as well. Also to consider is that this is free text search, so if you don't spell the search terms correctly, you won't get the right results. The search is not case sensitive.

Once you have submitted your criteria, relevant results are loaded in a map view in the main content area.

The map indicates the relative positions of any and all relevant service organisations matching your query.

To see an organisation's name, mouse over the service organisation's icon in the map view - this can be seen for "Central Clinic" in the above example.

To see an organisation's details, click on the icon to load a small popup window - this can be seen for "Barny Molokoane Clinic" in the above example. Clicking on the "MORE INFO" link loads the organisation's details in the right hand bar; clicking on "ZOOM IN" zooms the map in to a close up view of the organisation in relation to its surrounding areas.

The right hand bar is used for two main purposes:

  • to present a listing of the organisations displayed in the main content area in the map
  • to present an organisation's details when required.

Organisation Listing

This is the more usual, and default, purpose that the right hand bar is used for. Any organisations that are displayed in the center map view are also listed in the right hand bar; organisation name and basic address details (suburb and province) are shown.

By default, 30 organisations are displayed in the listing view; if more are required in the listing, this can be changed using the dropdown for this purpose (Show me ### results at a time).

If an organisation is moused over in the map view, the relevant organisation in the listing view is indicated with a light grey background colour (in the example shown to the right, "Bellavista Clinic").

If an organisation is clicked on in the map view and opened to show further details, the relevant organisation in the listing view is indicated with a dark grey background colour (in the example shown to the right, "Barny Molokoane Clinic").

Organisation Details

This is the less common use for the right hand bar. If a user chooses to see "MORE INFO" for a specific organisation, the organisation's details are displayed in the right hand bar.

We realise that this is not a typical website, so if you have any questions or experience difficulties - if you are unsure of the name of an area, or are not confident using the map - please contact the AIDS Helpline on 0800 012 322, where an operator will assist you with your query.
